A ready and available workforce is key to any business endeavor and Ulster County is home to a highly skilled and motivated workforce of over 80,000. In addition, a new employer will be able to attract employees from an additional pool of about 102,000 potentially available workers from the Ulster County labor shed.
According to the 2000 U.S. Census and the New York State Department of Labor, education levels in Ulster County exceed national standards; payroll costs are 53% less than New York City; and one-third of our workforce commutes an average of 35 minutes and would prefer to work closer to home.

Workforce development in Ulster County begins with our exceptional educational system and a commitment to a culture that values learning. Nearly 95% of the region's high school graduates attend college and more than 24,000 degrees are conferred annually for the region's 28 colleges and universities.
In our region 35% over the age of 25 have a Bachelor's degree. And New York State ranks first in degrees awarded in materials sciences, computer sciences, and medical sciences; second for degrees in electrical engineering, mathematics, and biological sciences; and third in civil and mechanical engineering.
