Ulster County’s central location makes it an ideal transportation hub for commerce and travel. People and goods arrive and depart easily by land, air and water. Ulster County offers easy access to metropolitan and national markets, as well as to the rest of the world. Planned commitment to our transportation infrastructure allows us to continually update, improve and strengthen access to transportation, with thoughtful impact on our environment and lifestyle. RoadwaysUlster County is ideally situated around three exits of the New York State Thruway (I-87) at New Paltz, Kingston and Saugerties, making it easy for commuters, residents and tourists to travel to their destinations. Connecting access to East/West I-84 and I-90 can be found in Newburgh and the Albany region respectively. Two bridges span the Hudson River in the northern and southern parts of the county. AirStewart International Airport offers direct passenger flights to many key geographic regions within the U.S., as well as connecting flights to other U.S. and international destinations. Acquired by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in 2007, $500 million has been set aside in a ten-year capital improvement plan to expand the airport. The plan includes the addition of a brand new terminal, the construction of a train station adjacent to the new terminal, connecting the airport to Metro North, runway extensions, new taxiways and expansion of the cargo facilities. Other notable services include a private helicopter shuttle to midtown Manhattan heliports and its ability to service private corporate jets because of the large amount of space at its availability. Federal Express and the U.S. Postal Service both maintain a large distribution presence at Stewart. Albany International Airport is a full service airport providing domestic and international passenger flights. It features a Business Center, providing travelers with a complete office environment from which to access the Internet, email or create presentations. The Kingston-Ulster Airport, the Wallkill Airport and the Joseph Y. Resnick Airport in Ellenville provide commuter and private air service. RailAmtrak offers comfortable passenger service traveling along the Hudson River from New York City North. Connections for farther destinations can be made in New York City or Albany. Metro North is the region’s commuter rail running north/south along the Hudson River. The second largest commuter railroad in the U.S., Metro North provides 120 stations distributed over seven counties in the state. CSX Freight Lines makes shipping and receiving freight in Ulster county convenient and safe. It provides the county access to more than 23,000 miles of track and 70 ports, as well as the largest intermodal network in the nation. BusAdirondack Trailways operates throughout New York State and into Canada, making Ulster county stops in Highmount, Pine Hill, Big Indian, Phoenicia, Mt. Tremper, Woodstock, Saugerties, Kingston, Rosendale and New Paltz. It is a convenient and comfortable way to travel to Albany, New York City, or points in between. Ulster County Area Transit (UCAT) offers safe and affordable public transportation service throughout the county. All routes can accommodate those who require wheelchair accessible service with advance notice. RiverThere are several barge companies that use the Hudson River as a means of transporting freight between Albany and New York City, with several stops in between. |
